After a stellar summer preparing for fall term, recruitment and the organization’s 75th Anniversary this coming March, the Office of Campus Activities recognized Apple Pi for its accomplishments in the month of August. The award, given to top performing organizations who reflect the excellence of student life at Drexel, is only given to one organization each month. The organization joins a short list of fraternities that not only excel in Greek Life, but also on campus, providing programming and other efforts to benefit campus.

The fraternity was recognized for the month of August 2009, where they hosted an on-campus blood drive, as well as an ambitious campaign to raise $1000 for the LiveSTRONG campaign.

According to a memo sent out by Richard Kopp, Associate Director of Campus Activities, “while most organizations focused on planning and development, Apple Pi continued their outreach efforts by co-sponsoring a successful Blood Drive Summer Challenge in partnership with the IFC and FSL and collecting 58 pints of blood from more than 70 donors. Furthermore, Apple Pi sponsored the 2nd Annual Smackfest Volleyball Tournament in partnership with Phi Sigma Sigma sorority. The event, coupled with fraternity-hosted pasta dinner night, raised over $1,000 benefitting the LiveSTRONG Foundation to aid in cancer research – this effort was the organization’s largest and most successful effort since returning to campus in 2006”.

Ted Desmond, Apple Pi senior and President at the time, noted that “as an organization, we were ready to take our Fraternity to the next level. We felt it was about time to really get involved and start getting some events set up that really benefitted the campus and the city in general". During Desmond’s tenure, the fraternity forged relationships with multiple fraternities and sororities, as well as campus departments and offices, while also identifying a local philanthropic cause. The organization’s success is a reflection of the leadership present within the organization, as well as the ambitious goals put forth by the organization moving into its 75th year of existence at Drexel, the second oldest active fraternity at Drexel University today.

Moving forward, with new leadership at the helm, the fraternity looks to continue the efforts from this past summer. The fraternity currently has one of its largest new member classes at 19 members, a strong presence in Greek Life, and is coming off of an exceptional performance in the CAA Blood Drive this past October, raising just short of 70 pints.
